Michael, thank you so much for the kind comment and for subscribing to my stack. I took a look at your own Substack and am intrigued, and I look forward to exploring your writings as well.
This is excellent; generous sharing. I'm off to lose myself in some 'good darkness' with Daniel Davison ... and I bought 4 Cormac McCarthys recently to make good on the paltry reading I have completed on his back catalogue. 'Blood Meridian' is the right sort of dark! Thanks for a great 'week in reading'
Thank you for the reviews and recommendations. You reminded me of something that I have noticed as well about Spotify and of Tiny Desk (I have neglected of late) as an excellent source of music and talented musicians. And you are spot on with the mention of Daniel Davison!
I'm really liking your weekly 'things I've read/watched/listen to' emails. I might have to steal this idea! (It's a good/easy way to keep subscribers up to date with things without droning on and on about 'how my writing is going - sometimes I feel all my general updates are like that)
Having said that, I LOVE LOVE LOVE NPRs Tiny Desk concerts!
And of course, love me some Joe Hill. I think I've mentioned this before but man, that apple did not fall far from the tree, and in such a good way.
My family is heading up to Bangor, Maine this Saturday to visit my brother and his kids. (I plan on dropping by Stephen King’s house for a quick photo, haha.) We’re going to drive through the night while the kiddos are hopefully sleeping. Slightly insane, I know. My wife and I have been back and forth about what audiobook we’re going to listen to on our 8-hour trek, and I am strongly advocating for Salem’s Lot. Something’s telling me it will keep us wide awake.
Thanks for sharing this update! I enjoy hearing about what you’re reading and what you’ve read.
I think it’s a great idea to share what we’re reading these days. Reading is such an isolated (but enjoyable) experience that we can feel like we are on our own independent islands. Plus hearing others’s picks can motivate us to try a book or read it a second time. After your summary, I started Salem’s Lot again. It is much better than I remember from my high school days. Also, the general plot arc and interesting details (like the vampire needing to elongate dogs) made certain scenes or foreshadowing somehow more enjoyable. I’m glad you like audiobooks. I think they are made or ruined based on the voice. This random YouTube audiobook Channel was great for fiction and nonfiction, but she simply hasn’t done enough reading (https://youtu.be/nOJ_7qn_vHA). You might like that chapter from a UK psychiatrist given your interest in horror and thrillers.
You are right in about the voice. I’ve started audiobooks and never finished because of a poor narration. I’ll give this a listen today! Thanks for the suggestion!
In retrospect, this male voice is incredible for horror. He disappeared randomly but his reading of Thomas Logotti’s “Nethescurial” got me back into horror: https://youtu.be/O9iOXqUEJo0 If you have time for just one I would do this one!!
Gosh, that was such a nice shout out. I’m speechless! ❤️
I really enjoyed the poem of yours Shaina shared, looking forward to exploring your stack

I’m happy to hear it! Blood Meridian is coming up for me. Pretty excited about it!
I haven't read a book like it ... and that's a compliment
I love Big Thief!
They are so good 😊

Wow, thank you so much for this shout out. Honestly made my month (and it’s been a rough one so I especially needed it!!). Thanks friend!
Any time! Hope it gets better!

I stole it from someone else and modified it to my liking! Go for it!
