Ah this sounds great! On Writing was the push I needed to start writing fiction seriously. That book has a lot to answer for! I love SK's short stories, but I've read some of his novels too, a long time ago.
Oh man! I think you hit the nail on the head here. Reading with connected King universe storylines would be so fun! (Delores Claiborne and Gerald’s game, IT before 11.22.63...yes!)
Big Dark Tower fan. It has its issues and niggles in places, and perhaps lost some of the drive after the midway point, but Roland's arc is so good. Wizard and Glass holds a really special place in my heart.
I'm not claiming the Tower is perfect or what I expected even...But as far as characters and reading experience...Top notch. Wizard and Glass is my favorite for sure!
Sounds cool! I'm in. The only Stephen King book I've read is The Stand. My version was 1015 pages and I remember that because I loved it so much I finished it in one week.
I read the original book. My favorite King novel. So I had to read the new edition; included everything the editor told King to cut the first time around!
I just came across this -- and I’m so dang excited. I love Stephen King. I remember first picking up his books when I was like 12, then again at 15, again at 18, and so on. I will absolutely join in and will make it my mission to get through Carrie tomorrow! (I read it once before but long ago. Isn’t the story that King threw it in the trash after trying to shop it and his wife dug it out?).
I’ve also been reading some of your other posts and they really resonate with me. I hope you’ll consider checking out my Substack, Some Feminist Fiction.
Ps - if you like King, you might like Out by Natsuo Kirino, it’s like a girl gang novel instead of a boy gang novel a la King.
Thank you so much for the recommendation! I can't wait to hear what you think about Carrie! And your Substack (I only read the brief strawberry story) is right up my alley! Thank you for taking the time to comment! I can't wait to read more of your work!
This is great, Shaina. I'll try and keep up, though I recently read The Shining at the start of this year. And huh, my memory would have said that Salem's Lot was far shorter than The Shining!
Totally loved the Green Mile, but haven’t read much of King otherwise. Just thinking about those long reads and character studies makes me want to start writing again. I’ve had a disappointing response to my short stories but as a writing coach once told me ‘you write for yourself’. So let’s go!
Welcome Stu! I have the same feelings when I read King and the same conclusions when I get discouraged. Nothing to do but write whether anyone likes it or not
I recently re read From a Buick Eight and The Eye of the Dragon. We've (husband and I ) either have most of his books in print and I've got a few on my Kindle. There are a few of his more recent that I haven't gotten around to yet (mainly because at the height of The Bug, circa March/April/May of 2020 I hardly did any reading). It's been a while since I was in a book club, so I'm up for anything that's chosen.

If you ever want to get into the Dark Tower series during this King-Fest, maybe give this link a click. https://digg.com/2017/how-to-read-the-dark-tower
I kinda followed the order they recommended. Don't wanna give anything away, but the Tower series is connected with other King novels.
I'm excited for this, I just hope I can keep up.

I think you can get really creative with this! But in my opinion you should be the one who leads us through the King Universe...I trust your judgment!

Wonderful! I can’t wait for you to experience more of his work. Wish I could read everything again for the first time.

I got it from Google so...hopefully you’re right!
Heh, I'm sure Google is correct. Just my brain failing me. I read Salem's Lot many, many years ago.

Great choices. I’m excited!
Me too!!!

Awesome!
I’m so excited to re-read Carrie and Salem’s Lot especially!! I don’t care what schedule you choose, I’ll just do my best to keep up :)
Can’t wait!!!
