Great to know about this story. I'm also not huge on King SciFi, though im having to think hard on what books of his tread more in that direction. Dreamcatcher?
Love your thoughts and commentary as always, Shaina.
As usual, you take diverse references and extracts and produce a narrative article that is more than the sum of its parts. I read it all with interest without having read any of the stories! Thanks
Yes, King often misses the mark when he delves too deeply into sci-fi. Some aspects such as watching Venus like a haunted house from afar were good, but the sci-fi elements felt ham handed (no pun intended) and more like Goosebumps from my childhood. Also, have you decided on voice overs for articles? One of the components that I like about your Substack is the audio versions of articles. I read people’s commentary on books all the time but rarely hear them express them verbally. I know those take longer so maybe you aim to do so for the larger books like Salem’s Lot.
That’s a great question! To be honest I didn’t want to drown readers in hearing me blab 😂 But if you think it’s actually worthwhile I will happily add verbal commentary. Talking is one of my favorite pastimes.
Yes, that would be great! Some Substackers have it as an added perk for paid subscribers but if you like to talk then that could draw in new subscribers like it did for me. Also, I find the experience of listening to an article versus reading to be dramatically different. In listening, we are more in tune to the feel of the stories or descriptions, while reading provides a better opportunity for analysis. This brief article captures the science behind it which I found captivating: https://psyche.co/ideas/do-you-think-more-clearly-when-reading-or-when-listening?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email
Totally agree David. For whatever reason that seems to result in his best work. I can definitely tell that King was writing with magazines in mind when he wrote these stories. They’re tailored to a certain style that was popular at the time.
Hey, its strange because I've read this short story collection before, but as I've said already, some of them feel new to me. This was one of them. I was struck by how similar this story is to one of my own, except mine's not in space. It's the titular story in my collection, Dark Is The Water.

Yeah I'd agree with Dreamcatcher

I agree. Pure sci-fi King is not my favorite. His best other worldly manifestations are phantoms that lived once in this world.
